FC Dallas is vying for its third consecutive Western Conference title but failed to reach the semifinals of SuperLiga. Still, the club kept its double hopes alive by beating Charleston 2-1 after extra time. Arturo Alvarez notched the match-winner.
Alvarez should win some award for his play this year, be it the Comeback Player of the Year, the Breakthrough Player of the Year or the Where the Hell Have You Been Your Whole Career Player of the Year. Something has gotten into Alvarez and he's suddenly delivering on the potential many (myself included) had started to give up on (okay, I'll admit, I had given up on him).
Alvarez and company reached their second Open Cup semifinal in the last three years. In 2005, FC Dallas didn't stop at the semifinals as the club reached the final before losing to the Galaxy 1-0. This year, FC Dallas faces perhaps the strongest team in the tournament (at least based on results) in Seattle. That figures to be a good match. Seattle has shown their strength and will most likely be ultra-focused while FC Dallas has been very good the last three years but has virtually nothing to show for it.
